Book Takeaways | The School of Greatness | Lewis Howes

As promised, I'm reading and sharing!

The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes is a gem.

Top Notes

A fast read with uplifting takeaways -- a sidelined former athlete with little to no prospects goes on a life-changing journey to discover what defines greatness in people, and stumbles into greatness in the process.

Read this one if you are in the market for...

Explore this one for all kinds of actionable how-to's passed on from pros in their respective fields, from taking better care of your health & body, cultivating a better attitude, practising positive habits, to leaving an impactful legacy behind.

Favorite Passages:

On having a vision:

"If you want to be great at anything, you've got to have a clear vision of exactly what you want, why you want it, and when you want it to happen." (...) "A powerful vision emerges when we couple our dreams with a clear set of goals. Without both, we are apt to wander in a clueless and purposeless fog, because a dream without goals is just a fantasy."

Habit vs. birthright

"Greatness is the result of visionaries who persevere, focus, believe, and prepare. It is a habit, not a birthright."

The Personal Principles Declaration (PPD)

"Declare to yourself and to your world what you stand for and live by, no matter what comes your way. When something goes wrong or doesn't happen the way you envisioned, you fall back on these principles instead of falling into a negative spiral or becoming a victim of circumstances. You don't let your bruised ego get the best of you, because your vision is bigger than your ego. You will never achieve what you really want if you let your ego stand in the way of your principles.

Here is Lewis Howes' PPD:

  1. Love myself, everyone and everything

  2. Be in service to support others and the world

  3. Always give my best and strive for greatness in everything I do

  4. Live in abundance

  5. Create a win/win with everything"

Here is my own PPD:

  1. If you're not excited about it, it's not the right path for you

  2. "Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others" (Cicero)

  3. A quiet mind is able to hear intuition over fear

  4. Change your story, change your life

  5. Just show up everyday and do the damn thing!

Other interesting tidbits

Lewis also has an excellent podcast, The School of Greatness Podcast. Its aim is to share stories with interesting guests on how to dream bigger, live better, and make an impact. Why not listen to an episode that piques your interest next time you go for a walk, get in the car, or do the dishes?
